Bedtime Routines That Actually Work for 2–6 Year Olds

"Just one more story!" "I need water!" "I'm not sleepy!" If bedtime in your home feels like a nightly negotiation, you are not alone. Many parents of young children find the hour before sleep the hardest part of the day.

The good news is that a simple, predictable routine can make evenings calmer for everyone. Here is how to build one that works for children aged 2 to 6.

How Much Sleep Do Young Children Need?

Sleep guidelines from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend the following in every 24 hours, including naps:

  • 1–2 years: 11 to 14 hours
  • 3–5 years: 10 to 13 hours
  • 6–12 years: 9 to 12 hours

Every child is a little different, so use these ranges as a guide. A child who wakes up cheerful and has steady energy through the day is usually getting enough.

Why a Routine Helps

Young children feel safe when they know what comes next. When the same calm steps happen in the same order every night, their bodies and minds start to wind down on their own. The AAP notes that all children thrive on a regular bedtime routine, and suggests starting early with something as simple as "brush, book, bed".

A Simple Bedtime Routine

Aim for about 20 to 30 minutes, at roughly the same time each night:

  1. Screens off. The AAP recommends turning off all screens at least an hour before bedtime.
  2. A light snack or warm milk if your child is hungry, then no more food.
  3. Bath or a quick wash and change into night clothes.
  4. Brush teeth and use the toilet.
  5. Story time. One or two books in bed, with the lights dimmed.
  6. A short goodnight ritual, such as a song, a hug and the same goodnight words every night.
  7. Lights out.

Make It Work at Every Age

  • 2–3 years: keep it short and exactly the same each night. A picture chart of the steps helps them know what comes next.
  • 3–4 years: offer small choices, such as which pyjamas or which story, so they feel in charge of something.
  • 4–6 years: let them tick off steps on their chart, and use a few minutes of quiet chat about their day before lights out.

Common Sleep Spoilers

  • Screens in the evening. The AAP recommends keeping TVs, tablets and phones out of children's bedrooms, especially at night. For more, read Screen Time in Young Children: How Much is Too Much?
  • Sweets and heavy meals close to bedtime. Keep dinner a little earlier and light.
  • Rough play just before bed. Save the running and tickling for earlier in the evening.
  • A late or long afternoon nap. For older preschoolers who struggle to fall asleep, a shorter or earlier nap may help.
  • A different bedtime every night. Try to keep it within the same half hour, even on weekends.

Handling "One More Story" and Getting Out of Bed

  • Agree on the plan in advance: "We'll read two books, then it's sleep time."
  • Offer a "last call": water and the toilet happen before lights out, not after.
  • If they come out of bed, walk them back calmly with very few words: "It's sleep time. I love you. Goodnight." Repeat as often as needed, without anger.
  • Praise the morning after: "You stayed in bed all night. Well done!"

Staying calm and consistent is what makes the difference. See Gentle Discipline: How to Say “No” Without Shouting for more ideas.

A Note for Parents

Every child develops at their own pace, and sleep patterns vary widely. This article offers general guidance, not a diagnostic tool or medical advice. If your child snores loudly, often wakes in the night, seems very tired during the day, or if you have any concerns about their sleep, please consult your paediatrician. Early assessment can help identify support needs.
